Living Skills in the Schools

Introduction :

The Miracles Club has developed a program regarding substance abuse that is not only highly educational, but also unique. The presenter's are individuals who are under twenty-five years of age and have been clean and sober for a minimum of 2 years. "Pilot" presentations have proven that the audiences of students ages 10 to 18 have responded positively to the messages given by a youthful presenter. A sharing of the presenter's experience with substance abuse, and the misfortunes that occurred. Then their ensuing recovery leads to a most effective question and answer session.

Targeted Audience :

Initial Presentation: Grade 5 Students (Elementary School)
Follow Up: Grade 6 Students (Middle School)

Justification :

The targeted audience is the age group at a pivotal point in their development regarding starting the use of drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol. The national study (U.S. National Household Survey on Drug Abuse) indicates that 14-15 year old children make a major jump in their use of these substances. The 1997 data demonstrates this as shown below:

The fifth and sixth graders are "targets of opportunities" to interrupt what is typically the period of new habit formation.

Presentation Format :

A youthful presenter will provide a twenty-minute program. The presenter will share past experiences, in an age appropriate manner, discussing the importance of establishing an addiction free lifestyle. The twenty-minute program will follow with a ten-minute question and answer session.

Student Objectives :

  1. The student will identify with peer pressure, family and community relationships, and the consequences of their behavior.
  2. The student will be able to identify with an appropriate young adult support person.
  3. The student will be able to identify with the reward of choosing a substance free life style.
  4. The student is then assisted in developing a positive self-image and understanding that there are ways to obtain assistance in facing life's challenges.
